iPad 2

The idea of a retina display on the iPad has long been talked about. There was suggestion that the iPad 2 would get a retina display but never surfaced due to Apple’s manufacturers struggling with the production and costs associated with such a high resolution screen.

New claims by DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim suggests that Apple has started production on the retina displays, he quotes:

“It’s happening–QXGA, 2048×1536. Panel production has started [for the next-generation iPad]. There’s three suppliers,” Richard Shim, an analyst at DisplaySearch, said in an interview today. Shim confirmed other reports that cite three companies, Samsung, Sharp, and LGD.”

With reports suggesting the iPad 3 will launch in the first half of 2012 and as early as March it’s not too long before we’ll know. However the reports are highly likely that the iPad 3 will carry a 2048×1536 display after background images of 2048×1536 were found in early versions of iOS 5.

London Cabs And iPads

London Cab

The UK Government have recently proposed to cut Legal Aid in the UK which hasn’t gone down well for obvious reasons. The team behind the Sound Off For Justice campaign have gone ahead and fitted a number of black cabs with iPads so that passengers can record their complaints about the proposed cut and have it sent directly (using the iPads built in 3G) to Justice Secretary, Kenneth Clarke.

Passengers will also get a free ride within zones 1-2 of the London capital if they sound off and make their opinions heard!

Seagate GoFlex Wireless HD

Seagate have just recently announced their latest portable HD. Now hard drives don’t tend to be overly exciting but this one is different in the fact it can stream files wirelessly to a number of devices including the iPad and other iOS devices. So in effect it is a 500GB HD and media streamer, you can easily just drag and drop files to it and then take it with you on a long journey and stream all those movies you popped on it to your iPad or iPhone….surely that’s sure to keep the kids entertained and you as well for that matter.

Engadget seem to like it and have reviewed it here.

iPad 3 Not Coming Later This Year

iPad 2Since the beginning of the year, there have been rumors flying around that not only would Apple be releasing the iPad 2 in March (which was the case) but the iPad 3 would launch in September of this year.

However, according to Digitimes sources this is not the case:

‘The sources pointed out that they have not yet received any notice for next generation iPad products and do not believe iPad 2 is a transitional product. With iPad 2′s strong shipment order forecast from Apple, the sources believe iPad 3 will not appear in the short term’

3D For iPad

What if you could experience 3D on the iPad without glasses! This is perhaps not as far fetched as it seems, Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay from the Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble have done exactly that and the results as far as we are concerned are very impressive indeed. They have also put together a demo video showing how it works:

‘We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction. It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera.’

At the moment the app does not yet appear to be available for download but if the video is anything to go by, we want it now!
