F1 2010 Timing App Review

iPad App Review
Type – Paid App
Category – Sports
Released April 1st, 2010

The F1 2010 Timing App is the only F1 App (at the time of writing) that offers a track view as well as split view timing. There is another  F1 timing app from Formula One Administration Limited but currently it’s only available for iPhone and you need to register on their website for the app to work and it doesn’t offer a track view.

The F1 2010 Timing App is one of the more expensive apps on the ‘App Store’ but is it worth it’s price? It’s probably a matter of opinion but one of the reasons we gave it 3.5 stars was due to its price tag. A few people have said that it’s a bargain as it only works out to just over £1 or $1.50 per race but we don’t feel that’s really an argument as it’s a bit like saying if you buy an iPad game at £20/$20 and you play it 20 times then it’s only cost £1/$1 per game, which we don’t find particularly good value for money.

So besides the cost, is it any good? In a nutshell yes, it is good and does exactly what it says on the tin so to speak. You’ll need an internet connection to use it, either WiFi or a 3G connection will work. It offers a lot of information about drivers and teams, a race calendar, drivers and constructors standings and latest news. The app can be used in both portrait and landscape mode and it has a nice feel and layout to it.

One of the nice things about the ‘F1 2010 Timing App’ is that at anytime you can choose to re-watch a race, so if you happened to record a race on your PVR and watched it a couple of days later you can open up the app and watch the race from the start as though it was live and if you pause your PVR you can pause the app as well.

Conclusion

The 3.5 star rating for the ‘F1 2010 Timing App’ really boils down to price. The cost associated with it is too high for what it offers, yes it looks great, yes it has lots of information but realistically it’s a timing app. If they halved the price then it would be more a 4 – 4.5 star app. The developers should also drop the price as the season progresses, you can’t expect someone to pay full price when the season is half way through. They could also offer people the opportunity to buy on a per race basis which could work nicely.

If you’re a die hard F1 fan then this app is a no brainer get over to the app store and buy it now, but if you’re the occasional viewer of F1 then it’s probably not worth your hard earned cash unless you’re loaded.
